The city was founded in 1667 around the Church of Our Lady of Remedios, their patron saint. We had great economic importance due to the sugarcane mills (had over 200) and is considered synonymous with good cachaça.

In the eighteenth century, it stood out as an important port where it drained of Minas Gerais, gold and precious stones that embarked for Portugal. However, with the construction of a new way of Royal Road, ending up directly in Rio de Janeiro, brought the city to a great economic isolation. This isolation made their buildings, culture and traditions stay preserved to this day.

Paraty takes its importance from the 70s, with the construction of the Rio-Santos highway making it one of the most important tourist centers of the country and the world.

Paraty was considered State Heritage in 1945, listed by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage in 1958 and converted into a National Monument in 1966.

It is in this scenario that the Pousada Arte Colonial is fully inserted, it works in a townhouse from the eighteenth century.
